It’s the responsibility of the Township to ensure every resident in North Glengarry is safe. And we need to collaborate with our first responders to uphold that responsibility.
Cody’s public safety action plan:
– arrange a meeting to review north glengarry’s disaster preparedness planning and strategize how to condense key points to relay to the public
– launch a mass emergency preparedness awareness campaign in north glengarry to ensure that when disaster strikes nobody gets left behind
– support local first responders with a renewed sense of vigor and respect. where it falls out of our direct jurisdiction, continue to be a strong advocate and fight to ensure local police, firefighters, and paremedics get the resources they need to keep us safe
Cody graduated from the Paramedic program at St Lawrence College in 2018 at the age of 20 years old. During his schooling, he spent 3 months doing 911 calls with Cornwall Paramedics and coordinated with Police, Firefighters, and medical staff to experience first hand what life is like on the job. He also learned how quickly first responders can become spread thin whenever multiple or large-scale emergencies take place.
Additionally, Cody Storm Pierce was born during the ice storm of 1998. If not for proper emergency planning his birth could have been dangerous or worse: fatal.
Pulling from the context of his birth and his past working closely with first responders, Cody realizes that North Glengarry needs to take a good hard look at what exactly our plan is when the next disaster strikes because it’s not a matter of if – but when. We need to ensure we have access to the resources necessary to handle a large-scale disaster. And most importantly – we need to ensure each and every resident knows how to prepare for the worst, what to do during an emergency, and where to go if home is no longer safe.
Back in the ice storm of 1998 the culture was different. People visited neighbours often. People had regular visitors, often unannounced. Now in the age of the internet many people (especially vulnerable seniors) rely on the internet as their sole method of communication. If the power goes out in a snowstorm for 5 days straight – how many seniors will be left alone with no means of contacting the outside world?
We need a mass emergency messaging campaign to ensure that when disaster strikes – every vulnerable resident in North Glengarry knows what to do and has pre-arranged a trusted person who will come and check on them.
Human beings tend to address issues only when they’re staring them in the face. Cody believes for the sake of safety for all – we need to start having these hard conversations as a community – right now.
